How to Write a Falling in Love Scene

Part One

  1. Male or female falling in love? Age range? Those are some criteria to consider.

»A. For a male falling in love.

I. For the most part, a teenage to young adult male falling in will have a different perspective, thoughts and pursuant than an older male. Was falling in meant for marriage? On a large note it would not be. During this age they either cannot legally get married or are focusing on finishing college.

A young male will have more influence from his friends and family when falling in love. He will care what others think about him because he is still growing, making his identity in the world. Of course there is always exception. So when a friend or family member isn’t too fond of his crush, the male may stop pursuing her. Therefore, it isn’t until some outside force or situation (good or bad) brings these two together, almost as if it were fate.

How much time and money does this young lad have to court his gal? Depending on what he has going on in his life, a girlfriend or dating may not be as important as other activities in life. This can include video games, hanging out with the buddies, going clubbing. With that said, not how mature your young character is. Maturity greatly affects this scene and how the character falls in love.

Lastly, what is love for your younger male character? Is it infatuation really or true love? “She likes the same show as me” isn’t love. When writing this scene, be sure to have the character value love far beyond same likes and dislikes. No insta love or “she’s so beautiful, I love her” because it wouldn’t fly much with your readers. True love develops over time or it is found by the characteristics and personality of the loved individual.

II. An older will most likely have an idea or what love is through trial and error from previous relationship. Outside forces wouldn’t have to intervene to get him in his lady friend together. Why? Because even though his family and friends are highly important to him, the influence over his life isn’t as great as it once was. He has identified who is in in the world, and depending on what he does for a living, may establish power and success. If someone doesn’t like his particular woman, he will likely shut them down in a heartbeat. What pleases him will not please another and he knows that. Love isn’t what makes happy. It is what makes your character happy. And the older he becomes, the more time he doesn’t want to waste. Finding someone to love is very hard. Finding someone to love you back the same is harder. With age comes wisdom and this man will not let that woman go to waste.

Note: A younger male can indeed be mature. But you must show the reader how that is possible. What made him mature in life? Therefore, a stronger sense of self can be identified.

»B. Females falling in love.

I. A young female falling in love is different from a young male falling love. It is true, ladies tend to mature quicker than males. However, this does not mean there isn’t folly with their choices either. She may choose a jerk over a nice guy. A rich man over a poor man. Although, she is more quick to realize her mistakes if she is searching for love, rather than having love find her.

Family and friends do not have as much impact on a younger female than it does with younger males. This is because males have an ego they must maintain with society pressures. Females do not. They desire attention most. When a male shows them the attention they deserve, friends and family’s opinion CAN come second to how she feels about a male. Her nature is to find a protector, someone who can provide for her. Therefore, if the lady believes she has found that in the male and he is giver her the needed attention, the woman will be loyal most of the time. Again, there is always exceptions.

Beauty and youth when finding a mate is an important factor when it comes to falling in love. A very attractive female will more likely wait longer for a perfect mate than a woman who doesn’t have that benefit. This doesn’t mean waiting long means a better mate, however it implies that family and friends can influence her decision greater than counterpart.

II. An older female, oddly enough will accept a greater influence from friends and family. This could be because in the past, she hasn’t chose the right men for her and assumes her loved ones know best. Opposite of a man. There is no right and wrong when finding love. Both genders have different approaches. Certain traits in a male will not be as important as it was in her youth. IF she wanted a wealthy man in her younger years, that might change as she ages.  For a variety of reasons such as: gaining her on wealth, realizing that money doesn’t equate to a proper mate, etc.

Old women and men are more likely in pursuit of love than younger women and men. They are also open to more options and have matured enough to spot and see what is and isn’t ideal for their potential mate. Older women allow outside forces to intervene when necessary and is more receptive to change than younger women. Change such as: moving to another place or country to be with their man, large gap in age,  culture difference, maybe being the pursuer rather than the pursee, etc.

Part Two

    1. Location and atmosphere.

»A. Where are they located during the process of falling in deep?

I. Can be at a place they are familiar with. This includes schools, stores, malls, parks, homes, church. Or a place they are not familiar with: a city, town, home, airplane, you name it. Falling in love doesn’t have to be at certain places. People can literally fall in love anywhere. Whether it be in a dark, mysterious alley (don’t ask) or in a wedding chapel. Describe the certain area they are located in the place. If they are at a church are they in the bathroom, kitchen, the sanctuary? For school are they at the playground, a class, the cafeteria? Is there anyone around them or are they alone?

II. Does the location make them physically close? Is it spacious or cramped like a closet? How far are these two people inside the area? For example, if the scene is in a church, one person can be at the front door of the sanctuary and another person can be at the alter.  Fallen in love doesn’t have to always be in close proximity with the mate. Maybe the scene is in a makeshift jail where the characters are captured as prisoners. They each have their own cell.  There is a barrier so distance is the only way they can fall in love.

»B. Is the atmosphere working with them or against them?

I. Whether it’s raining, snowing, or a hurricane is coming toward them, does this increase the likelihood of them falling in love? Fear makes people do and say the unthinkable. It is easy for someone to say or confess their love for someone during a natural disaster or dangerous situation than in a normal, everyday life one.

II. For rain or snow, the character may get closer together for warmth. The man may use an umbrella to cover the female instead of himself, which makes him look thoughtful. During a dangerous situation, he may protect the female over his well being, stick up for her when everyone is against them. The female may nurture the man when an outcome is unknown or be his support system. This can open his eyes to the woman as a potential mate.

Part Three

    1. Speech and Touch.

»A. What is said?

I. A resurrance that everything would be okay. Support for their goals, dreams and passions. Deep conversations. Truthful words that they wouldn’t even say to their own family and friends. Common ground in interests and views on life. Advice can be given. A song can be sung. “You are my world”, “I am falling in love with you” may be said.

What is said? Love doesn’t come easy for most. Have the character say something profound, endearing, shocking… that will set themselves apart from the crowd. Why is it that this particular conversation made your character fall in love and not the one before or after? What do they realize in the conversation that they haven’t before? It could be about themselves or about the person they are falling in love with.

»B. What physical contact do they have?

I. When the characters are able to get in close range, write about what they are doing. Can range from being very intimate to a light touch. These gestures: kissing, hand holding, moving hair behind ear, whisper in ear… are choices made by the individual. However, outside forces can come into play if the characters are shy or not willing to do so themselves. These include: others who tell them to make a move, being placed as dancing partners, or having to work on a project together in school or work, accidental situation that require them to work as a team.

II. It doesn’t always have to be touch necessarily. A prolong smile can be a gesture used. A flirty flip of the hair that was out of character. Open body language. Nodding, almost touching, swift brushing against skin, breath, laughs, moving in ways that are memorizing.

Part Four

    1. Internal dialogue and feelings both emotional and physical.

»A. What are they thinking?

I. Is the character trying not to fall in love with the person. Initially they didn’t find them as a proper mate or aren’t attracted to them, but for some reason things have changed. Their goofy laugh and smile now look genuine and sincere, endearing. The way they talk about their passions in life gives your character a warm feeling whenever they listen to the person. What they once hated is now a strong desire. If this is true, then what will they be thinking?

Ex:

“What’s happening to me, he isn’t my type,” she thought. “But he’s so gentle, kind, thoughtful. He reminds me of myself. Why am I feeling this way?”

II. The character already liked everything about the person but is certain about their love now. They could think that they always knew. Feel ready to tell the person. Remind themselves again why they loved them. Maybe compare the day they first met them to how they changed now, yet still love them. Think about how strongly they care the person, the future with the person, asking the person to marry them. Remember, these are thoughts. Not is yet said.

III. How do they plan on progressing their thoughts to actions. Can be deciding to say they love the person. Thinking of a place to buy a wedding ring. A place to get married. Telling their family they are in love. This is different from the previous one because it’s the character deciding HOW they plan on progressing their feelings and thoughts through actions. Thinking they want to marry someone is different than thinking about where they want to buy the ring and what kind of ring it would be. Thinking about a future such as a family and kids, is different than thinking about quitting a job to move closer to the person. Or saving up to buy a house. These progressive thoughts are the beginning of what action is about.

»B. What are the emotional and physical feelings?

I.  Emotion feelings of sadness from not fallen in love with the person sooner or anger from preventing them self from loving the person. Happiness, trust, peace, satisfied, calmness. You can easily insert these into your scene through thoughts, actions, dialogue or narrative. A simple ‘He finally felt like he could trust again, and it was because of her kindness that changed it mind’ will suffice.

II. The physical feelings to the above listed can be crying, smiling, furrowed eyebrows, deep or slow breathing, winking, fluttering eyelids, a pleasant look on the character’s face. You decide how to convey their emotional feelings. Be sure it makes sense with what is said.

Part Five

    1. Seal the deal.

»A. What is the ultimate actions the guy or woman does to make your character fall madly in love?

I. Kissing or hugging? A gesture or a word? Maybe a nice little note is given, explaining how the other person feels about the character. The person could come see the character after they are sick or needs to go to the hospital because of an accident. They bring flowers, keep them updated on what’s going on, ask how they are feeling? Actions like these can send someone over the edge of falling in deep.

II. How long has it been sense the character met the person? Give a very brief but insightful back story (maybe a sentence or two) describing how they went from friends to lovers. Or the person has always been there for the character since they were kids. How, they met at a party but were strangers until now, etc. Imagine this part being similar to movies or shows, where they show a quick recap of the lovers history.

III. Lastly, do they tell the person they are in love with them right away or do they wait for another day? How is it said and what is implied?
